Killeavy Go to the Dogs! A very large local crowd headed to the dog track in Dundalk for a quality nights entertainment. After winning a few quid on the races, everyone was back to the Social club for a brilliant evening's craic, dancing to the sounds of Brendan & Town and Country Band. High praise to everyone who helped organise and run this great event, which went off without a hitch. Im looking forward to next year already! Mícheál O Muircheartaigh Visits Killeavy! Saturday night was a marvellous occasion in Killeavy club, with the great orator Micheal O Muircheartaigh in sparkling form, recanting stories from as far back as the forties. A great crowd thoroughly enjoyed the proceedings, and sought Micheal's views on a host of GAA related issues and history. Magnificent Night Out At Dinner Dance! Despite the relegation of the senior footballers this year, this will surely go down as one of Killeavy's most successful seasons - with victories in Ladies Junior Championship, AC Minor League, AC B League, U16 SA League, U16 SA Championship, U12 Ladies AC Championship. The U16 All County league final is still to be played. Add to this the success of Armagh minors Kealan Downey, Conor King and James Donnelly, and it was truly a magnificent year. A huge crowd turned out last night for the event in Newry Golf Inn, with guest speakers Paddy O'Rourke and Laurence Crilly. X Factor - We have a Winner! Killeavy club was packed to the rafters on Saturday evening for the much anticipated X Factor final. It was a truly terrific evening's entertainment, and all the performers were of an exceptionally high standard. The top five finalists were Grace O'Reilly, Donal Trainor, Roisin Magennis, Rachel O'Hare and Margaret Jennings who ran out the eventual winner of the coveted £1000 prize. 60 Years bridged in Canal Court Function A function held in the Canal Court Hotel last Sunday evening to celebrate the golden anniversary of Fr. James McKnight's ordination turned into an historic Killeavy occasion when Michael and John McKnight who earned All-Ireland Minor glory with Armagh in 1949 were joined by our three current All-Ireland minor champions. Also present for the occasion was the Tom Markham Cup. The McKnight's have been stalwarts of Killeavy and Armagh down through the years including one famous occasion in 1956 when the entire Armagh full-back line was made up of three McKnight brothers. Pictured are the McKnight brothers; Michael, John, Fr. James and Felix along with their sisters Bridie and Mary and our three stars James Donnelly, Kealan Downey and Conor King.  |

X Factor Semi Sets High Standards! The first X Factor semi-final took place on Saturday night, in front of a large crowd in the club (Despite a delegation being at the Big Fight Night in Armagh). From a rousing version of "Fields Of Athenrye" from Brian Smith to a great pop duet by Stuart Stokes and Sarah McGreevy, and a rousing accoustic from Paddy Malone, X Factor is on track for a great competition to win the £1000. Rocky Watters loses controversial Split Decision A large Killeavy contingent made their way to the fight cauldron of the Armagh City Hotel, for the boxing extravaganza on Saturday night. Well done to Paul Watters, who went to town on Justy McNulty in the main event. Unfortunately, Justin had slipped the judges a bribe, and just edged a very crooked decision over the super slick, Sugar Paul on the night! Big Championship Double Header on Saturday Saturday is a big day on the field for Killeavy, with a double header for our ladies footballers and our minor team. The ladies face the Derry Junior champions Ardtrea in the first round of the Ulster Junior championship at 2-30pm, while the minor footballers have a quarter final championship game against St Peters following the ladies match at 4pm. Lets hope for a big crowd and two big wins!! |

X Factor Is Underway!! The first X Factor auditions were held on Saturday night, and a promising lineup, bristling with artistic talent, for the semi finals is already shaping up. Already through are Paddy Malone, Stuart Stokes, Grace O'Reilly, Roisin Magennis, Donal Trainor, Sarah McGreevy, Jennifer Ritchie, Darren McArdle, Kevin and Paddy McArdle, Patricia Fearon, Robbie Downey, Melissa McGuinness, Senior Ladies Girl Band, Sinead Ryan, Debra Ryan, Jeanie Henry and Brian Smith. This is not a final list of acts, and entrants are still welcome from inside and outside the Killeavy area, but must be over 16 years of age. The semi-finals are on 10th and 17th October and the final scheduled for 7th November. There is bound to be plenty of good natured banter and craic as well as fierce competition for the first prize of £1,000 and the honour of succeeding Miceal Connolly as Killeavy's X Factor champion. There will be a few clips up on youtube shortly, I'm assured - they should make interesting viewing! |

Killeavy's Influence on Sixty Years Ago Looking back to Armagh's only minor title well over a half a century ago in 1949, the Killeavy connection was very prominent then too. Senior Team Relegated A four point victory for Cullaville over Pearse Og in Armagh on Sunday afternoon, condemned Killeavy senior team to Division II football next season. The season was mixed, but a ten game run without a win proved a too difficult to recover from. Hope springs eternal, and Killeavy have had a lot of underage success in the past few seasons, and these players will come to the fore as Killeavy will seek to regain their Division I status in the not too distant future. |

Killeavy in All-Ireland Final With everyone looking forward to our minors taking part in next weeks All-Ireland final, it should not escape our notice that Killeavy took part in another All-Ireland final this weekend. The final in question was the FBD GAA Golf Challenge and took place in Faithlegg Golf Club in Waterford. The Killeavy team of Steven McDonnell, Brian McDonnell, Michael Concannon and Jim McKay qualified by winning the Ulster Championship Pennant in July. That in itself was a magnificent feat. Despite a strong showing in glorious conditions this weekend, the Killeavy quartet missed out on the honours. Testimony must be paid to a superb Mayo team from Claremorris, whose magnificent display blew the rest of the opposition away. Let's hope that's not an omen for next weekend! |

Hurling Summer School The hurling summer school took place for a week from 10 - 14th August with activities between 10am and 1pm each day. It was attended daily by up to one hundred children who were aged between five and fourteen years old. Our club mentors were supported by the expert help from coaches sent to the event by the County Board who commented on the excellent behaviour and interest of the children throughout. The week involved a trip to the JJB sports arena in Dundalk and was concluded with skills competitions and a mini sports day. The summer camp was a great success due to the children themselves and the large number of parents and teenage volunteers who made themselves available. Our minors Reach Croke Park Armagh minors reached Croke Park with a workmanlike victory over Kildare in Breffni Park on Saturday afternoon. Minors Make Impressive Start to Season Our minor team were involved in a key league fixture on Monday evening when they took on fellow table toppers Shane O'Neills. Both teams had won their first three league matches so something had to give. Killeavy were really up for this game and produced a total team effort with a star performance from Caolan Trainor who finished the game with a personal tally of 2-04. Killeavy started well with their first two attacks resulting in goals. The second goal in particular was a collector's item, a left foot rocket from twenty yards. The midfield pairing of Colin McEnaney and Lonnie Larkin put in a tremendous hours work and were well backed up by an industrious defence in which Michael Reel, Darren Bennett and Caolan Downey were outstanding. Up front, Conor King, Niall O'Neill, Cathal O'Hara and Michael McEvoy all showed very well for the ball, took the chances that came their way and worked tirelessly when not in possession. An excellent performance all round that bodes well for the rest of the season. |

Ladies News Our Senior Ladies did their league position a power of good this week with two wins, away to Derrynoose last Saturday and then a thrilling five point win against Lissummon played in horrendous weather conditions on Wednesday. Sevens Is Another Big Hit! Killeavy backed up last years inaugural Sevens tournament with another mighty days football for Gaels from all over the county. Sixteen teams took part, and Crossmaglen won the day, after a wobble or two early on. The evenings entertainment in the club was fantastic, as a huge crowd gathered to listen to Michael Connolly, and chat over the day's events!! Sevens A Week Away! The groups for this Armagh senior football extravaganza on 4th April is now just days away. The matches will start at 10-30am in Killeavy grounds, with the teams registering at 9-30 am. The club would also urge all members to turn out for the second Killeavy sevens on Saturday morning. The team registration for the event starts at 9-30am, and there will be plenty to do for all volunteers throughout the day. A lot of work was done this weekend past, on both pitches, to get ready for this red letter day for the club. Killeavy would extend a big thank you to all who have helped in the organisation of the event so far.   Some of the work going in on the new underage goalposts, which will also be used in Saturdays Sevens. |

Sevens Preparation Continues! The build up to this years Killeavy 7s tournament continues with the date being confirmed for Saturday April 4th. The successful hosting of last years inaugural tournament can be seen from the excellent response that we have received from clubs up and down the length of Armagh. Already, nineteen clubs have confirmed that they will be sending a team including last years winners, Crossmaglen, who with any luck will once again be All-Ireland champions by then. The tournament will consist of twenty teams, split up into four groups of five. It has also been confirmed that the draw for the tournament will be carried out live on local radio Five FM. Feile team bow Out! Killeavy u14s released their grip on two of the five trophies they won last year when they were beaten by Dromintee in the South Armagh Feile preliminary round. They did not give up their trophies without a fight however and pushed a stronger Dromintee side all the way into extra-time. Despite taking a four point lead early in the extra period, the additional power and strength of the Dromintee team eventuall wore down Killeavy and they ran out six point winners. With the majority of this team still being underage next year, they will have a much better opportunity to progress further in 2010 hopefully even to replicate last years squad by reaching the All-Ireland final weekend. Well done to all the team and management for a gallant performance on Saturday. |

Dinner Dance Celebrates large Trophy Haul A very large crowd attended the Dinner Dance on Saturday night in the Golf Club. As usual the meal was excellent, and the craic was great. Kileavy were able to boast ten trophies at the top table this season, which is a great improvement on last year, and lets hope we can build on our improvements again next season. In his speech, chairman Michael O'Neill lavished praise on the winners, but was also frank in his comments on some of the pressing issues facing the club. The prizes were handed out by Fr Naughton, Club President Larry King, and County Board vice chairman Ollie Hearty. Among the big award winners were richly deserved Club Person of the Year - Lilian Hannaway, Stephen McDonnell for his efforts in Australia, and helping Armagh to another Ulster title. Sinead Mallon, Ciara McConville and Una Hollywood were acknowledged for winning an Ulster title with Armagh Minor Ladies. The minor team picked up their South Armagh League medals, while the B team had two trophies on show, the All County and South League Cups. The hurlers also received runners up medals for their efforts in reaching the Ulster Division 5 league final.
