U21 Championship: Killeavy 1 10 Clan na nGael 1 09
Killeavy hosted clan Na Gael in the under 21 quarter final on a blustery Saturday afternoon. Gerald Byrne got an early lead for killeavy when he used the strong wind to carry the ball over from a tight angle. Clan’s equaliser was fortunate when a shot that was 2 feet wide was deemed over the bar. Darren O’Hanlon restored the lead with a well taken point and when Barry Magee rifled the ball into the top corner things looked well for killeavy. In the 14th minute clans struck back with a point coming from a free kick 14 yards out. Byrne and Malone hit a point each for killeavy before the break but 2 late first half points form clans left it 1 04 killeavy 0 04 clans. With clans playing with the wind in the second half it was going to be hard in the killeavy defence, but with in the first seven minutes of the half chick hanaway had slotted over 2 fine scores from the left wing. Clans next score was cancelled out well by Byrne’s who was giving his man the run around over the hour. Clans then suddenly burst into life hitting 4 unanswered points between the 16th and 20th minute 2 minutes later disaster struck when a high ball was dropped in the killeavy square and it was somehow poked into the killeavy net leaving it 1 07 to 1 09 with 8 mins left. Killeavy stuck to their task well passing the ball out of defence instead of the long ball that some of the crowd were calling for. This paid immediate dividends as chick hanaway once again scored 2 points in a matter of minutes to square the match. With 2 minutes left Gerald Byrne added a point to put killeavy ahead going into injury time. From the kick out clans worked the ball well up the field and were rewarded with a 14yard free straight in front of the posts. The match looked to be heading for extra time but the clans forward some how managed to screw the ball wide.
