Killeavy 0-10 St Pats 0-10

A large crowd turned up on Thursday evening in Killeavy for the visit of St Pats, on what was a glorious evening for this league match. Paul Rocks returned to the Killeavy half-forward line after a long lay off with injury, but unfortunately Gary Reel was still unavailable. From the throw-in Killeavy moved up the field and pointed through Gerard Byrne. It was Killeavy who were much more potent looking in the forward line early on. Indeed, St Pats forward play was very poor for the first twenty minutes, with even simple frees being missed. Killeavy, on the other hand, were winning frees and Mark Stanfield was kicking them over splendidly, kicking four consecutive frees to leave Killeavy in the driving seat. St Pats eventually got on the board, and started to threaten in the last ten minutes of the half. A great save from Sean Og Duffy kept out a goal, and as half time arrived St Pats had amassed 8 wides. Killeavy's best point of the half came just before the break from Barry Magee who kicked an excellent point off his left foot.

Half-Time: Killeavy 0-6 St Pats 0-03

The second half started in the same vein as the first half ended. Three St Pats wides and another super save from Killeavy keeper Duffy were all forgotten when Killeavy scored from their first attack from a glorious free by Gerard Byrne. Straight from the kickout, Stanfield broke the ball back into the St Pats defence, and Byrne hit another great point, this time from play. When Anthony O'Hare pointed, Killeavy led 9-3, and the lead could have gone beyond doubt when O'Hare carved open the Pats defence, only to see his shot from a narrow angle well saved. Surely the game was over with Killeavy in the ascendancy, and looking dangerous with each attack? Not quite. For the next 15 minutes St Pats poured forward, except now they started to convert chances. Point followed point, as Killeavy couldn't clear their lines. With a minute played in injury time, St Pats hit the lead with their seventh point in a row. When Killeavy's last gasp attack for an equaliser seemingly broke down, the game appeared over, but a late tackle meant a free to equalise for Raymie Teggart, which he kicked over from thirty five yards to draw the game. Killeavy will wonder how their performance managed to deteriorate so badly in this game. St Pats will surely never play as badly again for forty minutes. Neither side will be very happy, and it will be all to play for in the Championship encounter later in the Summer. At least Killeavy will take the pluses from the return from injury of Adrian Doran, Seamus Toner and James Duffy late in the game.
