Senior Football Division 2: Killeavy 0-08 Silverbridge 0-08

Silverbridge arrived in Killeavy on Saturday afternoon needing a point to reach the promotion play-offs proper, while competition for places in Killeavy this season has become so intense, that any player can't afford to take his foot off the gas for a brief second if he wants to make the team for the play-offs. With the winter closing in, the pitch was extremely heavy and a swirling breeze meant that a high scoring game was most unlikely. The breeze favoured Killeavy for the first ten minutes and this helped them get the first two scores, Gerard Byrne really back in last year's form after his early season hamstring woes. He got the first point from a free before finishing a fine move from play. Silverbridge were getting ample ball in this period but lacked real penetration in their forward line, Killeavy's fullback line of Quinn, Reel and McKevitt were well on top, but brought some problems on themselves by constantly overplaying short fist passing out of defence. Several of these moves were intercepted, and cold have led to major problems. Silverbridge managed two points in the half, both from frees, one a good long range effort, the second from the 21 yard line. Seamus Toner hit a towering point from 35 yards from play to put Killeavy back in the lead, while Byrne converted another free to give Kileavy a 2 point lead at the break.

Half-Time:Killeavy 0-4 Silverbridge 0-2

If the first half was pretty mundane stuff, the second half started superbly with Gordon Magennis finishing off a blinding move with a great point. A great driving run out of defence from Barry McKevitt led to a Raymond Teggart point, and it looked like Killeavy were well in control. However Silverbridge raised their game and hit three quickfire points from play, two of which were of real quality. Gerard Byrne finished another great move for his fourth point of the day, but Killeavy could just not shake the Silverbridge challenge. Killeavy keeper Brian Teggart was fortunate to see one ball go over off the crossbar, while two very late frees for the Bridge got them the draw they badly needed. This was a tough encounter, and the play-off draw was made directly after the game in Killeavy club, and pits the two sides together again on Saturday 11th November in Mullaghbawn. That should prove to be another eventful match with the entire seasons work at stake. Killeavy will really need to step up their efforts now to compete in the play-offs. They have about thirty players competing for a starting spot, and it's going to be a tough job for the management to pick the team.
