Senior Football League Division 2: Killeavy 1-11 Carrickcruppen 1-11
Killeavy were home to Carrickcruppen on Friday night last, in a match played in beautiful sunny, hot conditions. Mark Stanfield was available, and lined out at centre
forward, while Paul Watters made his return from an extended period of injury. Indeed it was the domination of Duffy and Watters at midfield in the opening period, that gave
Killeavy a strong attacking platform. Several good moves resulted in points before a lightning quick move up the pitch saw James Duffy and John McKevitt place Anthony O'Hare straight
in on goal, and he made no mistake with a slick finish to the bottom corner. Carrickcruppen, however, managed to stay in touch in the match, their freetaker, Seamus Kane was really on song,
converting many long range efforts with ease. Further points from Stanfield, McKevitt and Teggart had Killeavy well placed at the break with a three point lead. It really should have been more,
when one considers the amount of possession they had in the period
Half-Time: Killeavy 1-06 Carrickcruppen 0-07.
The second half started well for Killeavy, a few half time tactical changes paying divideneds, and James Duffy playing at his dominant best in midfield. An nspirational effort from Stanfield ten minutes
in had Killeavy five in front and absolutely flying. For some reason, however, all the good football stopped after this point. A lack of composure from the home side, and some good play by Carrickcruppen's
halfback line, saw Cruppen work their way back into the match. The Killeavy defence was still holding well, but were coming under more and more pressure. Cruppen had closed the gap to three points going into injury
time. They played several high balls to the square that were broken away, but one last throw of the dice broke around the Killeavy square, and the loose ball was punched to the net to give Cruppen a draw that had looked
so improbable 20 minutes earlier. This was definitely a point lost for Killeavy, who still really have yet to put together a full sixty minutes this year. If they could keep the pedal down for a full hour, they would
be a formidable team in this division, but the periods of slack play need to be eradicated. The final twenty minutes were definitely the worst I've seen from Killeavy in a long time, while some of the play in the first
half was a joy to watch.
