Hard to know what score to enter on this report. Perhaps the main story of this game unfolded at the end of the match, when everyone at the game, from Clann Eireann and Killeavy alike, thought that
Killeavy had won by a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-09. However, the referee's notebook recorded the score as 1-09 each, so that will go in as the final score of the match. Controversy to cloud the outcome of a game
that should have been over well before the final whistle. Killeavy played with wind advantage in the first half on a thoroughly hot and sunny afternoon in Killeavy. There has been a bit of history between the sides this year,
wth an eventful draw in Lurgan at the start of the league, and a Killeavy victory in the championship match up in May. This game followed a simlilar pattern to the other games this year as Killeavy shot out into a big lead
early on. Justin Reel played in Adrian Doran for an early point, and score after score followed, so much so that the referee evidently couldn't keep up. The next score was a goal, James Duffy winning possession from a Clann Eireann player
in midfield, and setting up the break. A soccer style move that Italy would have been proud of, finished off "Ian Rush" like by Seamus Toner. Paul Rocks, Anthony O'Hare(2) and Mark Stanfield (2) saw Killeavy race into a 1-6 to 0-1 lead.
Clann Eireann rallied briefly to score three points in a row, before Raymond Teggart and Adrian Doran finished off a fine first half. Killeavy hit 1-7 from 1-8 from play and only one wide in the entire half. The pick of the points were long range efforts
from Mark Stanfield and Adrian Doran, while Paul Rocks played his best thirty minutes for Killeavy, pointing the only ball he kicked in the half.
Half-Time:Killeavy 1-08(1-07) Clann Eireann 0-04
As with the previous ecounters, Killeavy seem incapable of playing out a full sixty minutes and closing a team out of it. Ditto here. A great early point from Raymond Teggart, after good combined play by Justin Reel and Johnny McKevitt, was followed by another
inept spell in the game. Clann Eireann came into the game, their halfback line really upping the pace in particular, and some good long range frees got them back in touch. A really poorly conceded penalty followed. The Clann Eireann player was actually facing his own
goal, heading nowhere when he went down under challenge. The emphatic finish to the top corner left only three between the sides. A fine solo effort fisted over the bar by Anthony O'Hare was Killeavy's second and last point of the half. Clann Eireann got back seemingly to within a point,
but a last minute free to Killeavy thirty yards from goal seemed to end the game as a contest. Mark Stanfield's effort was poorly struck and blocked down as the referee blew the final whistle. It was then all the fun started with several phone calls to Carol Vorderman failing
to change the referee's calculation of the final score. If only Killeavy could play for a full match, some team would get a hell of a beating. As it is, point after needless point is being dropped.
