Killeavy 1-11 Carrickcruppen 0-08

Killeavy faced their second crucial home game in a week, when Carrickcruppen visited the Memorial Park on Friday night. On the back of the victory over Lissummon on Sunday, another two points were needed to give Killeavy a boost and really set them on their way back up the table and out of the danger zone. Killeavy fielded a largely unchanged team, with Raymond Teggart starting in place of the ill John McKevitt. A beautiful evening looked in prospect, but there was continuous drizzle throughout the match, with no breeze to mention. Killeavy started off much the better side, and should have hit the net early, Gerard Byrne's free rebounding off the upright to Seamus Toner, who saw his shot somehow scrambled off the line. Adrian Doran eventually rescued a point from the attack with a great score from forty yards. Raymie Teggart then went close for a goal twice, seeing a fisted effort flash across goal, before seeing another shot blocked from a good position. Gerard Byrne then started to pop over a few scores for Killeavy, two from frees and one from play. Cruppen responded with a few good frees of their own, several of which were very questionnable decisions from a referee who was a bit fussy with both sides. The highlight of the half was a great long range point from Barry Duffy from the middle of the park, hopefully leaving his injury woes behind him for good this time. As half time approached, a great free from fifty five yards from Carrickcruppen left them only a point behimd at 6-5. Killeavy should have led by at least six, given their missed goal opportunities, wides, and several easy chances dropped straight into the keeper's hands.

Half-Time:Killeavy 1-06 Carrickcruppen 0-05

Seamus Toner has shown glimpses of his talent this year, without really putting a solid string of performances together. Hopefully he'll be able to build on his second half show in this match. He started the half kicking two wonderful points from play, both under heavy pressure from the defence. A fine breakaway score from the wing from Gary Reel re-asserted Killeavy's dominance before Adrian Doran showed his poacher's eye, blasting home from 15 yards to finish off a great Killeavy move. With a six point lead in place, Killeavy sat back a bit on their lead. Cruppen, playing only two men up, refused to lend more players to the attack. This was a puzzling move and they played into Killeavy's hands, the backline picking up ball after ball. Paul McArdle, playing well at centreback then moved up to smash a couple of 45s all the way over the blackspot to leave Killeavy sitting pretty. Indeed a late square balll decision saved a depleted Cruppen side from a much heavier defeat.
This was another great result for Killeavy, the team playing better football, although the opposition has not been great in the past few games. A win on Friday at home to Ballyhegan is still a must to see them edge out of relegation trouble. The tide is turning at last, hopefully!!
