Dromintee 2-08 Killeavy 1-06
On an ideal evening for football in Mullaghbawn, Killeavy faced Dromintee in a very entertaining championship match on Saturday last. Killeavy played with a strong breeze early on, but it was Dromintee who made the early running. A close range free gave them the lead, but they missed quite a few early chances, with half a dozen wides and a shot against the Killeavy bar. It was no surprise when they scored a goal to give them a four point lead. Killeavy, after such a slow start, eventually started to play their way into the game. Carmel Mallon at fullback was Killeavy's best player on the night, ably assisted by her sister Anne in the corner. Meanwhile, Sinead Reel was the pick of the halfback line, and her distribution of ball to the forward line was of an extremely high standard all game long. It was the ever-dependable Aileen Matthews who got Killeavy's charge underway from the penalty spot after Sinead Mallon caught a high ball brilliantly on the edge of the Dromintee square. Aileen's shot was low and hard to the corner of the net. From that point on, Killeavy had the better of the half, but it was their turn to miss chances, 8 wides in the half, but they did pick up two further scores. Good work from Sharon Reel, who played despite illness, setting up Aileen for another score, while a thirty yard free left the score at halftime, 1-4 to 1-2.
Aileen Matthews about to last home a penalty.
Half-Time:Dromintee 1-04 Killeavy 1-02
The second half was noticeable for the sin-binning of Aileen Matthews after 12 minutes. The ten minute period in which she was off, saw Domintee hit 1-03 and really take the match away from Killeavy. An early point from Sinead Morgan had been cancelled by two Dromintee points before the sin-binning. All this left Killeavy with an 8 point defecit with 8 minutes to play. The Dromintee goal was most disappointing, Killeavy seemingly having cleared the danger, before a scrabled effort trickled over the line. Killeavy pressed hard for the last ten minutes, and had several chances cleared away. Two points from Aileen, and a good score from Ciara McConville, were just not eough to claw back the deficit on the night. The girls tried hard and played right until the final whistle, but will look back with regret on another 9wides in the second half.Full-Time: Dromintee 2-08 Killeavy 1-06
