LFC Final in Silverbridge at 6-00pm on 28th August
Killeavy 1-06 Armagh Harps 1-09
A three point defeat for Killeavy does not accurately reflect the story of this Intermediate Championship final, played in dry automnal conditions on Saturday evening. Going into injury time, the sides were level, and it was Killeavy who were pressing for the winner, but ultimately it was Harps who got the winning score, a goal from a quickly taken thirteen yard free right at the death.
Killeavy played up the hill in the first half, and started very well. Despite going a point down, they were passing the ball well, getting in front and showing well for ball. Aveen Dooley kicked Killeavys first score from an acute angle, following good setup play from Ceire McConville and Joanne Shields.
The next score was a well taken goal from Aileen Matthews, played in by Marianne Watters, she turned well and wrong footed the keeper to blast home. Killeavy were now well on top in all sectors of the field, so two further points from Aileen Matthews – set up by Sharon Reel – and Aveen Dooley again gave Killeavy a four point lead after twenty minutes. Harps dominated the rest of the half, however, and scored two points to bring them to within one at the break.
HT: Killeavy 1-03 Armagh Harps 0-05
Harps were out of the blocks quicker in the second period, and two points from the very impressive Shauna McCready, edged the Harps into the lead. A further Harps point after ten minutes meant Killeavy were 2 down and hadnt scored for twenty minutes. Our girls then regained the momentum, and a great point from Sharon Reel had Killeavy right back in the mix. Some agonising wides did not help Killeavy’s cause as they tried to get on terms. Nevertheless, a score from Aileen had us level. Both sides exchanged points, Harps edging into the lead after Killeavy lost possession in midfield when well placed to attack. Again Aileen Matthews equalised.
Heading into injury time, Killeavy were camped in the Harps half, and pushing for the winner.
The go-ahead point was just out of grasp, and as a replay looked likely, Harps got a late, close-in free that they took quickly to score past Nicola Cromie, who , despite a great second half display, could not get close to the shot.
There was heartbreak for Killeavy at the final whistle, and tears at the nature of the defeat. The girls and management can be proud of their performance and commitment in this final. We can rue eight second half wides, but we must come back stronger next season. Well done to the whole team and management, who have been a credit to the club this year, whether it be training, matches or club events. Killeavy will be back to win this title next year.
